Getting It Right From the Start: Why Early Learning Foundations Matter More Than Ever

As both a mum and a teacher, I see learning from two very different but equally powerful perspectives.

At home, I watch my eldest — ten years old and working out percentages in his head in seconds — and I can’t help but marvel at how naturally it seems to come to him now. Then I look at my youngest, just five, proudly blending sounds and reading short words with a grin that lights up the whole room.

And in those small, everyday moments, I’m reminded of something that matters more than anything else in education: getting it right from the start.

The Power of Strong Foundations

Phonics and early maths aren’t just subjects. They are the building blocks — the roots beneath every other part of learning. When children gain confidence in sounds, patterns, and numbers early on, it shapes how they see themselves as learners.

It’s not about rushing them or making them compete; it’s about giving them the right tools, at the right time, in the right way.

Those first sounds, those first number bonds — they set a tone for everything that follows. If they’re taught with clarity, care, and consistency, they give children confidence. If they’re rushed or confused, children can carry that uncertainty for years.

That’s why, at Learning Loft, we believe in expertise from the very beginning.

Why We Have Specialists for Every Stage

We’ve built Learning Loft so that every stage of education — from the very first sound to the most complex secondary topic — is supported by people who truly understand it.

Our primary specialists know exactly how those early sparks of learning form, how phonics connects to reading fluency, how number sense grows into problem-solving confidence.

Our secondary specialists understand what comes next — how those early foundations evolve into analytical thinking, deeper reasoning, and creative expression.

Together, they form a continuous bridge, ensuring that what’s learned in Reception connects all the way through to GCSEs.

Because real progress happens when every stage speaks to the next.

Connecting School and Home

But expertise alone isn’t enough. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned — both in the classroom and around the kitchen table — is that learning flourishes when school and home work together.

That’s why everything we do at Learning Loft is built around communication: supporting teachers and parents with shared language, clear goals, and resources that make sense on both sides.

When parents understand how phonics works, they can celebrate progress instead of worrying about mistakes. When teachers know how home learning is going, they can tailor their support more effectively.

It’s a partnership — and when it’s strong, children feel it.

Getting It Right — Together

Watching my two boys learn has been the most beautiful reminder that education isn’t a race; it’s a journey built on trust, curiosity, and the foundations we lay in those early years.

At Learning Loft, we’re here to make sure those foundations are solid — not just academically, but emotionally too. Because when children feel supported, connected, and understood, that’s when real learning takes flight.

From first sounds to final exams — we’re here to help every learner, every parent, and every teacher get it right from the start.
