Marking software for schools

Learning Loft's marking software gives teachers a first-draft mark and comment for every piece of written work, aligned to the mark scheme they already use. Teachers upload a class set — typed or photographed — and LoftTick returns criterion-by-criterion feedback and a whole-class picture of common errors. Nothing reaches a pupil until the teacher has reviewed and approved it.

Who this is for

Headteachers, deputy heads with responsibility for teaching and learning, heads of English, humanities and science, and subject leaders reviewing marking policy.

The problem schools describe

  • Marking is the single biggest driver of teacher workload, and it is the reason strong teachers give when they leave.
  • Written feedback arrives too late to change what a pupil does next.
  • Marking policies are applied inconsistently across a department, so moderation eats department meeting time.

How Learning Loft approaches it

We do not remove the teacher from marking — we remove the blank page. Your mark scheme, rubric or exam board criteria are loaded once, then every class set comes back with a draft mark, evidence-linked comments and a summary of the errors the whole class made. Teachers edit what they disagree with, approve what they do not, and the department gets a consistent standard without extra moderation meetings.

The tool behind it: LoftTick

Specification-aware marking and feedback with mandatory teacher review before release. See the LoftTick product page.

What it does

  • Upload a whole class set at once, as typed text, photos of handwriting or PDFs
  • Marking against your own rubric, department criteria or exam board mark scheme
  • Criterion-by-criterion comments with the evidence from the pupil's work attached
  • Whole-class error summary so the next lesson can be reshaped before it is taught
  • Teacher review and approval on every response — feedback is never released automatically
  • Department-level consistency records for moderation and quality assurance

How schools get started

  1. Send us the mark scheme or rubric for one unit so it can be loaded
  2. One department runs a single class set through LoftTick alongside its usual marking
  3. Compare the draft feedback with the teacher's own to agree where you trust it
  4. Roll out department by department, with a twilight CPD session for staff

What schools find in practice

Departments typically use LoftTick first on extended writing, where the drafting stage takes the longest — that is where teachers report the clearest time saved on their own marking.

Frequently asked questions

Does a teacher still have to check the marking?

Yes, always. LoftTick produces a draft for the teacher, who reviews, edits and approves it. Nothing is published to a pupil without that approval step, and our responsible AI position sets out where automation stops.

How much does marking software for a school cost?

School licences from £995 + VAT per year, with the price depending on your school's size and requirements. Every licence includes unlimited staff and pupil access within the licensed school, onboarding and CPD. Multi-school and MAT pricing is bespoke.

Can it mark handwritten work?

Yes. Teachers photograph or scan handwritten work and upload it; the text is extracted before marking. Legibility affects accuracy, which is one reason teacher review is compulsory.

Will it give pupils a GCSE grade?

No. LoftTick marks against criteria and reports marks and strengths and next steps. It does not award grade boundaries, because those change year to year and are a professional judgement for the school.

Which subjects does it work for?

Anything marked against written criteria — English, humanities, science extended responses, RE and business are the most common. It is not intended for multi-step mathematical working.

Where is pupil work stored?

In UK-accessible infrastructure under a data processing agreement, with role-based access so staff only see the pupils they teach. See our security and data protection page for detail.
