LoftTalk is a UK oracy assessment tool that gives schools a structured way to run speaking and listening assessment at scale. Pupils complete carefully designed spoken tasks; their responses are transcribed and mapped to a clear four-strand rubric covering content, structure, vocabulary and delivery. Teachers get consistent judgements, class-level insights and the evidence base leaders need for curriculum intent and implementation — without live-scribing every response or reconstructing judgements after the lesson. It supports KS1 through KS5, including GCSE English Language Spoken Language endorsement.
What LoftTalk is
LoftTalk is the oracy strand of the Learning Loft platform. It gives teachers a structured way to set, capture and assess spoken responses — from short retrieval answers to extended presentations — without burning lessons on marking.
Who LoftTalk helps
- Primary teachers embedding speaking and listening in everyday lessons.
- Secondary English departments preparing pupils for GCSE Spoken Language.
- SENCOs and EAL leads tracking spoken progress for learners who struggle in writing.
- Senior leaders evidencing oracy as part of curriculum intent and implementation.
Key benefits
- Ready-made task banks aligned to UK curriculum expectations.
- Automatic transcripts for every response, ready to annotate.
- Consistent rubrics for content, structure, vocabulary and delivery.
- Class-level insights to identify common strengths and gaps.
- Secure, GDPR-compliant recording and storage.
How LoftTalk saves time
Traditional oracy assessment relies on listening live, scribbling notes and reconstructing judgements later. LoftTalk replaces that with structured tasks, transcripts and a single rubric you can apply quickly. Teachers report saving meaningful time per class set, with more consistent judgements across the department.
How LoftTalk supports schools
LoftTalk slots into existing schemes of work. Subject leads can build shared task banks, moderate samples across the department and produce evidence for inspections, parents and progress meetings. It also pairs naturally with LoftTrack for whole-school progress tracking.
Tracking pupil oracy over time
Because every task is saved against the pupil, oracy progress tracking stops being a folder of recordings nobody revisits. Teachers can compare rubric scores across tasks and terms, spot pupils whose delivery has improved but whose structure has not, and take the same evidence into pupil progress meetings. Pair it with LoftTrack if you want spoken outcomes sitting next to written assessment data for the same class.
Speaking and listening assessment across key stages
- KS1–KS2 — short structured talk tasks for speaking and listening assessment, with transcripts you can share with parents.
- KS3 — presentation and discussion tasks that build towards secondary oracy expectations. See oracy activities for the classroom routines that come first.
- KS4 — GCSE Spoken Language assessment with a four-tier rubric and a printable record for your exam board file.
- KS5 — extended presentation and seminar-style tasks for sixth-form courses.
Buying LoftTalk — for a school or for yourself
Whole-school rollout is covered on oracy assessment software for schools. Individual teachers can start on a Teacher Membership — Learning Loft for teachers and the oracy assessment tool for teachers show what a single class looks like.
