The Learning Loft Guide to Question-Level Analysis

How to turn assessment data into better teaching — without losing hours to spreadsheets. A practical, teacher-written guide for classroom teachers, heads of department and SLT.

Free · No sign-up · PDF

LoftTrack is UK school assessment software built for the reality of a busy department. Instead of copying results into a spreadsheet after every mock or class assessment, LoftTrack turns raw data into question-level analysis, curriculum gap reports and pupil-level insights automatically. Assessment leads, heads of department and class teachers see the same clean view — strongest and weakest questions, pupil groups falling behind, specification points to reteach — so the conversation moves straight from data to action. It plugs into class quizzes, marked papers and manually entered scores (including SATs and GCSE mocks), and pairs with LoftTick and LoftTest to keep the whole assessment cycle in one place.

What LoftTrack is

LoftTrack is Learning Loft's assessment tracking strand. It takes class assessment data and turns it into the insights teachers actually need — strongest and weakest questions, pupil-level gaps and progress over time — without the spreadsheet overhead.

Who LoftTrack helps

  • Class teachers planning responsive teaching after a test.
  • Heads of department moderating standards across teaching groups.
  • Assessment leads and SLT reporting progress with confidence.
  • SENCOs identifying barriers at question level for specific cohorts.

Key benefits

  • Automatic Question Level Analysis from any class assessment.
  • Pupil-level gap reports that translate straight into intervention plans.
  • Progress views across terms, year groups and cohorts.
  • Pairs natively with LoftTick and LoftTest.
  • UK-hosted with GDPR-compliant data handling.

How LoftTrack saves time

Most schools still run QLA through spreadsheets — slow, fragile and rarely revisited. LoftTrack generates the same analysis automatically, with class and pupil views that are ready to use in the next lesson, the next parents' evening and the next data drop.

How LoftTrack supports schools

LoftTrack gives leaders a clean picture of pupil progress and gives teachers something concrete to act on. It also supports the curriculum conversation — surfacing the specification points that need reteaching and the ones the cohort has secured.

A better alternative to QLA spreadsheets

Most QLA in UK schools still lives in a spreadsheet that one person maintains and nobody revisits. LoftTrack replaces it with a shared, permanent record: enter marks once, get the class, pupil and cohort views instantly, and compare the same questions across terms. Our question level analysis guide explains the method, and assessment analysis covers how to lead the conversation that follows.

Where the data comes from

Marking and analysis belong together. LoftTick pushes confirmed marks straight into LoftTrack, LoftTest supplies the low-stakes quizzes, and LoftTalk adds oracy evidence so speaking and listening sits next to written outcomes for the same class.

From gaps to responsive teaching

A gap report is only useful if it changes next week's lessons. Pair LoftTrack with retrieval practice so the weakest questions reappear in low-stakes quizzing, then reassess and check the gap actually closed.

How we build this responsibly

LoftTrack reports pupil performance; it does not assign grades or make decisions about pupils. Row-level security means staff only see the pupils they are entitled to, and we publish how our automated analysis is designed and reviewed on our responsible technology page.

Buying LoftTrack — for a school or for yourself

Whole-school and trust licences are covered on question-level analysis software, with the procurement questions to ask on how to choose QLA software. Individual teachers can start on a Teacher Membership — Learning Loft for teachers and the QLA tool for teachers show how one class set works.

Where to go next

Read our case studies, see whole-school plans on For Schools, or book a demo and we'll run QLA on one of your own mocks.

Frequently asked questions

What is Question Level Analysis?

Question Level Analysis (QLA) breaks down assessment results by individual question, allowing teachers to see exactly which skills, topics or specification points pupils have and have not mastered. It's a more useful signal than a single overall mark.

What is LoftTrack?

LoftTrack is a UK assessment tracking platform that produces QLA reports, gap analysis and pupil progress views automatically from class assessments — no manual data entry into spreadsheets.

Can LoftTrack import existing assessments?

Yes. LoftTrack supports class quizzes generated in LoftTest, marked papers from LoftTick, and manually entered scores from any other test, including SATs and GCSE mocks.

Is the data secure?

Yes. LoftTrack is UK-hosted, GDPR-compliant and uses row-level security so each user only ever sees the pupils they are entitled to. A Data Processing Agreement is available for schools.

Will it help with Ofsted and progress meetings?

LoftTrack produces clear evidence of pupil progress and curriculum coverage. Reports can be shared with leaders, parents and external moderators in line with your school's data sharing policy.

Is LoftTrack an alternative to QLA spreadsheets?

Yes — that is exactly the problem it solves. Instead of maintaining a fragile spreadsheet per assessment, results are entered or imported once and the question-level, pupil-level and cohort views are generated automatically and kept for comparison over time.

Can LoftTrack analyse GCSE mocks and KS2 SATs?

Yes. Both are common uses. Enter or import the marks question by question and LoftTrack produces the gap report, cohort comparison and reteach priorities, including for named pupil groups such as disadvantaged pupils, SEND and EAL.

How does QLA translate into intervention planning?

Each pupil gap report lists the specification points not yet secure, so intervention groups are formed around the same weakness rather than around an overall grade. Reassess later and LoftTrack shows whether the gap closed.
