What early years tutoring actually looks like

Early years tuition is not a shrunken primary lesson. Sessions are short — usually 30 minutes — highly visual, and driven by talk, games and repetition rather than worksheets. The tutor works with your child while you stay nearby, and finishes with one small thing to practise before the next session.

Lessons run live in LoftClass, Learning Loft's own browser-based classroom — not a generic video call. Shared whiteboard, document and screen sharing, live captions and optional recording are built in, so a pupil can re-watch the exact explanation they need later in the week.

What we cover in Nursery and Reception

  • Phase 2 to Phase 4 phonics: single sounds, digraphs, blending and segmenting
  • Early reading: tricky words, decodable books, reading for meaning
  • Early number: counting, subitising, number bonds within 10
  • Mark-making, letter formation and pencil control
  • Spoken language, listening and following instructions

Preparing for the Year 1 phonics screening check

Children who leave Reception secure in blending almost always pass the Year 1 phonics screening check comfortably. Where blending is not yet secure, a weekly session in the summer term of Reception is far more effective than intensive drilling in Year 1.

Frequently asked questions

Is a three or four-year-old too young for tutoring?

Not for short, playful sessions. Early years tuition works when it is 20–30 minutes, talk-led and game-based. If a child is not ready to focus online, we will say so at the free consultation rather than take a booking.

How long is an EYFS session?

Usually 30 minutes. That is long enough to teach and practise one thing well, and short enough to end while the child is still enjoying it.

Do I need to sit with my child?

Yes, for the youngest children we ask a parent to stay nearby to help with the device and keep the session settled. The tutor leads the teaching.

How do I request EYFS tutoring?

Tell us the pupil’s year group, subject and preferred times. We will match a suitable qualified UK teacher and confirm an available slot. The first consultation is free.
