Starting point

Andrew was working towards the English requirements of the Chinese Gaokao curriculum while living in Tokyo. He needed support not simply with accuracy, but with the quality and confidence of his English. Story writing and continuation writing were particular areas for development. He also needed to develop more natural English expression, stronger vocabulary and greater confidence when developing and communicating ideas.

What the family wanted help with

The aim was to help Andrew improve his Gaokao English performance while also developing stronger story writing, continuation writing, vocabulary, sentence structures, natural expression and confidence. The goal was not simply to rehearse exam questions, but to help him become a more confident and effective English communicator and writer.

Learning Loft approach

Andrew’s lessons combined direct Gaokao support with broader English-language development. Rather than relying only on fixed templates, lessons encouraged him to think carefully about story structure, character, atmosphere, vocabulary choices, sentence structure, tone, description and how ideas connect naturally. New vocabulary was taught in context, and discussion before writing helped him develop his ideas more confidently.

What lessons focused on

Gaokao continuation-writing techniques

Story structure

Descriptive writing

Vocabulary development

Sophisticated sentence structures

Natural English expression

Planning ideas before writing

Improving cohesion between paragraphs

Developing characters and settings

Avoiding repetitive vocabulary

Editing and improving written work

Discussing ideas confidently before writing

Responding accurately to examination-style tasks

Progress

Within approximately four months, Andrew’s assessed performance improved by more than two grades. The strongest progress was seen in story writing, continuation writing, vocabulary, natural expression, sentence variety, confidence developing ideas and the overall quality of his written responses. He became increasingly willing to experiment with more ambitious vocabulary and sentence structures rather than relying on safe, familiar language.

Confidence

Andrew’s progress was not limited to written marks. Regular one-to-one discussion helped him become more confident explaining ideas in English before committing them to paper. This gave him more opportunities to test vocabulary aloud, develop ideas, explain choices, ask questions, experiment with language and receive immediate feedback. That spoken confidence increasingly transferred into his writing.

What happens next

Andrew’s tuition continues to focus on strengthening his Gaokao English while developing the broader communication and writing skills that will support him beyond the examination itself. Future lessons continue to build natural expression, advanced vocabulary, continuation-writing technique, story development, accuracy, independence and confidence.
